VanceS: Hi Dennis DennisOl: Hey, Vance. DennisOl: Nergiz (a new Webhead) left just as you and I entered. I hope she comes back. VanceS: she went to webheadsinactino DennisOl: What's happening there? VanceS: no idea DennisOl: Maybe she thought she was at the wrong place. VanceS: want to go look? Or should I? DennisOl: I'll go. But I'll be back here. VanceS: ok, I'll hold the fort NergizK joined the room. NergizK: Hi DennisOl: Nergiz! Merhaba! NergizK: Hi Dennis. Good to see you. NergizK: I thought nobody would be coming DennisOl: Good to see you, too, Nergiz. The Webheads chat is kind of small right now, but others will show up. IainKC joined the room. NergizK: Hi Vance DennisOl: Hi, Laine. (Is it Laine?) NergizK: All riht. I see. VanceS: Hi all DennisOl: Even though we're a small group right now, we're certainly international. VanceS: yes, it's early morning in the USA and a lot of our members are from there NergizK: That's for sure, Dennis VanceS: I'm in the UAE NergizK: Abu Dhabi, right DennisOl: I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. VanceS: correct NergizK: What time is it in Arizona, Dennis? VanceS: Must be 5 a.m. DennisOl: It's almost 5:15 AM on Sunday, March 2nd. RitaZ joined the room. NergizK: I was in Dubai once, Vance. NergizK: Oh, that's early. VanceS: Hi RIta, what did you do their Nergiz? NergizK: I'm glad this meeting is at a convenient time for me RitaZ hugs everybody hi DennisOl: Yes, it's early, but I love these Webheads chats. VanceS: Where are you now, Nergiz? DennisOl da un gran abrazo a Rita NergizK: It was just a stop over from Pakistan back to Frankfurt NergizK: I would love to stay there for a while and learn Arabic DennisOl: Rita: Congratulations on having your story on the TESOL entry page! RitaZ corresponde el gran abrazo de Dennis, muy fuerte :-) VanceS: Yes, I saw that DennisOl smiles NergizK: Hi Rita, I've read that story, too. RitaZ: thank you, Dennis, no big deal..., just what I felt ;-) NergizK: Dennis, how do you show emotions (like "smile")? DennisOl: It's a VERY big deal, Rita! IainKC left the room. RitaZ . o O ( embarrassed ) DennisOl: Tapped In uses different codes. If you type a colon (:) and then a verb, you get the equivalent of an emoticon. DennisOl: For example, DennisOl smiles NergizK: ;happy VanceS grins NergizK: (;) happy NergizK: Hm DennisOl: No, use a colon, not a semicolon. And use a verb. DennisOl feels happy NergizK happy DennisOl: I typed :feels happy NergizK: Ah NergizK: wait VanceS: if you write :is happy it will bwork NergizK feels happy DennisOl thanks Vance NergizK is happy VanceS . o O ( thinks she's got it ) DennisOl: Perfect, Nergiz! NergizK -) RitaZ: fast learner you are, Nergiz! DennisOl: Now one of you can tell how to do the "think" bubbles. RitaZ: ok NergizK: Thanks, Rita. But among you experienced Webheads I feel a bit like I don't know anything VanceS: write th/ and a thought DennisOl: Yes, Nergiz is definitely a fast learner! DennisOl: th/thinks Nergiz will get this quickly, too. RitaZ: write /th plus your words DennisOl . o O ( thinks Nergiz will get this quickly, too. ) NergizK . o O ( thinking ) RitaZ: wow DennisOl: Perfect! NergizK: With such teachers, I should! IainKC joined the room. DennisOl . o O ( wonders if he'll ever remember that the / comes first ) NergizK: Is there a list somewhere in Tappedin with these codes? IainKC left the room. RitaZ . o O ( same as Dennis... ) NergizK is grateful RitaZ . o O ( Nergiz is very welcome ) IainKC joined the room. DennisOl: Hi, again LainKC. DennisOl: Welcome back! NergizK: I've been learning so much the past weeks, thanks to the Webheads. DennisOl: Nergiz, If you go to the Actions menu at the top right of this chat screen, the last item on the menu is "text command help." VanceS: we learn from each other DennisOl: Definitely, Vance! IainKC: Hello Dennis DennisOl: Hi, Lain. Where are you chatting from? (I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.) NergizK: Hey, thanks Dennis! That's great. DennisOl: My pleasure, Nergiz. DennisOl: The two that are most often used here in the chat (in my opinion) are the ones with : and /th . NergizK: That's pretty easy then. DennisOl: Yes, definitely easy—except that I always forget that it's /th instead of th/ . DennisOl . o O ( wonders if he'll ever get that straight ) VanceS . o O ( ahhhh ) NergizK: Can I ask how else you use TappedIn? Do you use i with your students? DennisOl: Some Webheads do. IainKC: Hello Dennis: As I am new I an still learning how the key functions work here. Apparently "shift" operates as "send". Anyway I see you have sent eomething agein.. In Arison it must be still morning. I'm here in Switzerland looking out towards the snow covereed mountains. RitaZ: we can, yes, nergis RitaZ: we can also have our own offices VanceS: I use it every sunday at this time to interact with colleagues DennisOl: Switzerland! Wonderful! DennisOl: I know that Nina Liakos uses Tapped In for chatting with her students. NergizK: Rita, I have my own office here. But it's new. Haven't done much with it yet DennisOl: Yes, it's early morning here, Lain—almost 5:30 AM right now. NergizK: Lain, where in Switzerland are you? RitaZ: great, Nergiz, so you are already acquaninted with this wonderful space NergizK: A bit, Rita. Afer taking a tour with BaW08. IainKC: Yes, not bad. I've been in Phoenix only once. It was January and there was snow on the surrounding hills. The sun shone and I remember the countryside as gentle but very beautiful - even in Janauary the colours were great. DennisOl . o O ( I'll never forget that tour! ) NergizK: I will start my first online lessons in about two weeks - experiment DennisOl: You were in Phoenix at a special time, then, Lain. There's very seldom snow here, even on the "mini-mountains." DennisOl: That's wonderful, Nergiz! DennisOl: What kind of lessons will you offer? PattiGH joined the room. PattiGH left the room. NergizK: I hope it'll work out. The students are former f2f students of mine. They won't pay but give me feedback instead. General English IainKC: About thirty years ago. By the way "Lain" - so far I have received this only from German speakers. DennisOl: I think the feedback will be as valuable as pay—especially in the early days of your courses. DennisOl: Is "Lain" a surname, then? NergizK: Definitely, Dennis. NergizK: I'm a German speaker IainKC: Nope. Iain is a first name: Means "John". How do you manage to multiplex so efficiently? DennisOl: If you need comments from a foreigner, Nergiz, don't forget me. DennisOl: I guess I have a fragmented mind, John. NergizK: Thanks for offering, Dennis. I would appreciate that very much. IainKC: Hallo, Nergizk, wie geht's dir? Wlher kommst du? DennisOl: Vance is the master of multi-tasking, though. RitaZ /th Dennis is one of the most versatile beings I've met... RitaZ: oops DennisOl: Not as versatile as you, Rita! NergizK: Jetzt bin ich in der Türkei, aber die letzten 16 Jahre Freiburg. Und du? RitaZ: me...??? :-() NergizK: You must be both versatile IainKC: In Bern in der Schweiz. Ich bin seit fast dreissig Jahre hier sesshaft. DennisOl: Actually, I think everyone who gets involved in the Webheads is versatile. NergizK . o O ( Riat and Dennis are versatile ) IainKC: Volatile DennisOl . o O ( Nergiz is versatile, too. ) RitaZ . o O ( wishes she could meet Dennis f2f some time ) NergizK: Have you never met? DennisOl . o O ( piensa lo mismo para Rita ) DennisOl: Not face to face, Nergiz. RitaZ: nope, Nergiz, but it feels as if...;-) NergizK: Bern, I passed there once. That's certainly a long time DennisOl: Yes, it definitely feels as if we've met. IainKC: ?albas Castillano tambien? RitaZ: si, Iain, soy de Argentina DennisOl: Para mi, si, pero no muy bien. NergizK . o O ( Webheads are multilingual too ) DennisOl: Definitely! RitaZ: ah, Dennis? El habla 20 idiomas!!! VanceS: multitasking multilinguals DennisOl . o O ( multilingual, multitasking, multiethnic, multicultural . . . . . ) VanceS: multiliterate NergizK: How much time do you spent online? DennisOl: multitalented NergizK is curious RitaZ . o O ( loves the way Vance multitasks and manages to put up a comment here and there, not missing a single word! ) DennisOl: I probably spend four or five hours a day online, but I used to spend much more. IainKC: Argenita. Muy bien pero estabe ahi solo uns vez - y olbido demasiado. He perdito mis cononces de Castillan, lo siento para ti, Espanol. VanceS: I'm an expert at APPEARING to not miss a single word :-) NergizK -) DennisOl . o O ( am amazed at how well Vance manages to do that ) RitaZ: you are Vance, in all modesty...!! ;-)) VanceS: now now, we're all good at that DanielGst3 joined the room. RitaZ: but I bet you are right now chatting with at least 5 people at the same time, while writing an article for a mag... DennisOl: Hi, Daniel. Welcome! RitaZ: Vance IainKC: Phew. This fast writing tires me out. I'm off for a coffee. Caio. DennisOl: Ciao, John. Come back, OK? RitaZ: chau, Ian, enjoy! VanceS: nice to meet yuo Iain NergizK: You'll get used to it Iain IainKC left the room (signed off). NergizK: I'm having a @(_) of tea DennisOl: Where are you chatting from, Daniel? (I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.) DanielGst3: hi NergizK . o O ( sorry I can't share it with you ) DanielGst3: I'm in grand forks, north dakota DennisOl: Is it still pretty chilly there, Dan? NergizK: People in the USA are early risers RitaZ: wow, great icon for a cupa, Nergiz!!! NergizK: I like it too, Rita. You can also have a large @(__) DennisOl: I agree with Rita! C\_/ DanielGst3: it's getting warmer... NergizK: Your's is good too, Dennis. RitaZ: ha ha first time I see it :-) DennisOl: What's the temperature there now, Dan? VanceS: hmm @(_) DanielGst3: yesterday it went into the 30s...how about in arizona? NergizK: Enjoy it Vance! ClaireB joined the room. NergizK: Is it coffee or tea? RitaZ: hi, Clari, a hug! ClaireB: hi guys ClaireB hugs all DennisOl: It's about 55ºF now. Should be around 70 by this afternoon. NergizK: Hi Claire DennisOl: Claire! DennisOl gives Claire a big hug VanceS hugs claire IainKC joined the room. NergizK: Rita, you are in Argentina, right? DennisOl: WB, Lain. RitaZ: yes, nergiz VanceS and offers her a cup of @(_) ClaireB: I'm in new jersey at the neallt conferene ClaireB: conference NergizK: Must be eary there, too. ClaireB: nergiz, where are you? DennisOl: NEALLT??? VanceS: is worldbridges there as well? NergizK: I'm in Turkey. DanielGst3 left the room (signed off). ClaireB: northeast association of language learning technology DennisOl: Ah. Thanks, Claire. NergizK: Wow ClaireB: cool nergiz RitaZ: I visited Istanbul some months ago, Nergiz, loved it!!! IainKC left the room (signed off). DennisOl: I'll be back in a few minutes. (Need to refresh my c\_/ ) ClaireB: i am soooo excited that so many webheads got scholarships to go to japan in worldcall! NergizK: Really? Too bad I didn't know the Webheads then. We could have met NergizK: I'm in Bursa, just two hours from istanbul RitaZ: yeah, Nergiz, true. I met Beyza, know her? DennisOl: Yes, I'm excited about the WorldCALL scholarships, too. ClaireB: vance, you really have to go to worldcall just to see all the webheads ClaireB: they owe a lot to you, vance NergizK: Yes, I know Beyza from Baw8 RitaZ: well, we ALL owe ALL this to Vance DennisOl: (and now for my c\_/ ) ClaireB: yes i know beyza, at least online ClaireB: have a good cup, dennis VanceS: I check my email every day looking for some excuse to go to WOrldcall NergizK: I have just moved to Turkey, but my family is here. ClaireB: yes, well the notifcations seem to be held up.. NergizK: What kind of excuse are you waiting for Vance? RitaZ: thers still time, Vance VanceS: some justification to buy a plane ticket NergizK: Ah, I see. NergizK: Great for those who got a scholarship. NergizK: Some sessions will be also in SL, right? ClaireB: yes NergizK: I'll at least try to be there. ClaireB: oh you mean worldcall sessions in sl? I don't kow VanceS: in SL or in Fukuoka? NergizK: Only in SL, Vance. NergizK: Maybe I'm confusing this with another event. NergizK: This is what I mean: http://www.theconsultants-e.com/edunation/WirelessReadySL.pdf NergizK: Must be something different NergizK: This is in March DennisOl: Where are you in Turkey, Nergiz? NergizK: In Bursa, Dennis. NergizK: That's near Istanbul. The 4th largest city NergizK: in Turkey RitaZ: how far is it from Istanbul, Nergiz? VanceS: there's always lots going on in SL ClaireB: sl is amazing NergizK: About two hours, Rita. RitaZ . o O ( any minute Dennis will come up with a url for Bursa...;-) ) VanceS: I've been there actually NergizK: In Bursa, Vance? RitaZ: whats it like, Vance? big city? old? ClaireB thinks that vance has been **everywhere*** VanceS: rented a car and drove around Turkey once RitaZ: but Argentina, Clari ;-) VanceS: it's fairly modern being close to Istanbul ClaireB: vance, not to argentina? even I have been to argentina :- NergizK: I've just started a blog - my first one - about rediscovering Bursa. It' changing a lot, beautiful RitaZ: lol DennisOl: I'd love to visit Turkey some day, Nergiz. ClaireB: congratulations, nergiz ClaireB wants to visit turkey too VanceS: I have stepped over the border into Iguazu but Rita never tires of telling me that doesn't count NergizK: You are always welcome Dennis. ClaireB: what is the address of your blog, nergiz? NergizK: I wanted to visit Iguazu, but didn't work out. RitaZ: Istanbul made a big impact on me, I went there on Ramazan..., incredible experience ClaireB agrees with rita that stepping over the border does not count DennisOl: Bursa #1: DennisOl: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bursa ClaireB: here comes dennis with the url RitaZ: Iguazu, Nergiz? there are better spots in Argentina, the south, for instance DennisOl: Bursa #2: DennisOl: http://www.mersina.com/Turkey/Marmara/Bursa/index.html RitaZ: ahhh, unmatchable Dennis!! ClaireB: my husband says I gotta go to the conference now -- bye guys! DennisOl: Bursa #3: DennisOl: http://www.allaboutturkey.com/bursa.htm RitaZ: good luck, Clari!!! bues! RitaZ: bye DennisOl: Take care, Claire! Enjoy! VanceS: twitter it Claire ClaireB left the room (signed off). DennisOl: Claire goes to a lot of conferences. RitaZ: do you twitter every day, Vance? I keep forgetting to...:-( VanceS: I try and twitter in the morning and in the evening when home DennisOl . o O ( makes me remember that I haven't twitted for several days ) RitaZ: wow, twice a day! VanceS: the other day I caught a Jeff Lebow presentation, live from where?? VanceS: I wouldn't have known RitaZ: ?? VanceS: Twitter is full of surprises NergizK left the room (signed off). DennisOl: Yes, it's a good way to keep on top of things. That's why I have a Twitter account. RitaZ: ah, will make a point of being there more often VanceS: I just pop in and hit a few URLs and often turn up some gems DennisOl: Also, if you follow a number of people and don't sign in daily, you end up with an ENORMOUS number of things to check out. It's sometimes a bit overwhelming. VanceS: it's a place where people can be creative DennisOl: Definitely! VanceS: I don't bother with things that are more than a few hours old RitaZ: good to hear that, Vance, so far I hevent seen anything that makes me think its a worthwile thingie... DennisOl: That's a good approach, Vance. VanceS: each page covers about 4 hours for me DennisOl: You are absolutely amazing, Vance. RitaZ: great eye-opener, Vance, thanks VanceS: If I hit two pages it's what happened while I slept DennisOl: hee hee hee VanceS: but to me it's the chance nuggets RitaZ: yeah, Dennis, he is, You are, as well, we are very lucky people, the Webheads VanceS: you don't need to look under every rock in the stream DennisOl: Yes, they're definitely what makes it all worthwhile. DennisOl: Definitely, Rita! VanceS: it's not what you miss that's important VanceS: it's what you catch RitaZ: so I'll now look at Twitter through a different eye ;-) DennisOl: BTW, I closed the comments on my "Transitioning from Estrella" blog. DennisOl: I'll leave it online until March 15th, though. RitaZ: why, Dennis? VanceS: I think you mean, why not longer? RitaZ: yeah, Vance, thanks DennisOl: Because I wanted to do the blog to mark thoughts on one specific event—and to offer background on what led up to it. DennisOl: Now that the event is past, I'm ready to "retire" "Transitioning" and make a different kind of blog. RitaZ: ah, I see, dennis, a specific stage in your life RitaZ: soecial DennisOl: Yes, precisely. RitaZ: special, sorry DennisOl: I liked "soecial"! RitaZ smiles DennisOl: I thought it was a word I'd never heard of! And I like the sound! RitaZ: stiff fingers at times... DennisOl: Me, too. I come up with some interesting typos. DennisOl: Any thoughts as to when the next Convergence will be, Vance? VanceS: Bi-annual is good VanceS: the proceeds are due out in two weeks, from the last one DennisOl: Ah, good. VanceS: once that's off the plate I start thinking of the next one DennisOl: Makes perfect sense. RitaZ: ok, guys, a cloudy cool day here, will do some cooking, am leaving, dear gentlemen... DennisOl: I like the idea of bi-annual convergences. DennisOl: Take good care, dear Rita. VanceS waves RitaZ: thank you, Dennis, you too, have a great week DennisOl manda fuertes abrazos y sus deseos para una semana fantastica RitaZ: lo mismo para mis queridos amigos Dennis Y Vance, chau! RitaZ left the room (signed off). DennisOl: Chau! ¡Ai te wacho! DennisOl: I guess you saw the list of winners for the WorldCALL conference in Fukuoka. DennisOl: I think 7 of the 13 were Webheads—and maybe more. VanceS: yes, DennisOl: Very impressive representation! NergizK joined the room. DennisOl: Welcome back, Nergiz! NergizK: Sorry, I had a power outage DennisOl: Hope everything's OK now. NergizK: Hope so, too. NergizK: Happens sometimes. NergizK: I typd my blog address. Did it appear? DennisOl: I didn't see it. Try again. NergizK: rediscovering-bursa.blogspot.com NergizK: http://rediscovering-bursa.blogspot.com/ NergizK: As I said, my first blog NergizK: Still doing my Baw08 homework DennisOl: It's beautiful, Nergiz! I'll be sure to leave comments there. NergizK: That would be great, Dennis. NergizK: Usually, people are shy to leave comments. My friends send me an email instead NergizK: Thanks by the way NergizK: You know, only now, that I've actually started blogging do I understand what it is about and why people like it. DennisOl: I was just scrolling through the contents of your blog. Very interesting and plenty of really nice photos and graphics to add interest. NergizK: Thanks. I thought if I ask my students to blog, I need to show them how and that I am also doing it. DennisOl: My ideas about blogging have changed a great deal over the years. When I first started, I didn't like blogging very much. NergizK: Do you only use blogging for teaching or also for yourself? DennisOl: Right now, I'm working at re-doing a blog that I started last year. It focuses on "relaxed" pronunciation. VanceS: You can google writingmatrix to discover my ideas about blogging NergizK: I'll do that Vance. VanceS: one blogs for one's self DennisOl: I use it for both. In the past, when I was teaching in a college here in Phoenix, I used blogging for part of my writing classes. NergizK: pronunciation - sounds interesting SeanEM joined the room. DennisOl: I agree that one blogs for oneself, but I think it's possible to do blogs that are oriented toward co-teaching and co-learning. DennisOl: Hi, Sean. Welcome. NergizK: What about professional blogs, Vance. I mean class blogs, etc. SeanEM: Hey, How are you? VanceS: this is the great difference in writing, the contribution of blogs DennisOl: Doing well, Sean. Where are you chatting from? (I'm in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.) SeanEM: Im in NYC SeanEM: but relocating to Baltimore soon DennisOl: I totally agree, Vance. DennisOl: Are you interested in computer-mediated communication, Sean? VanceS: blogs lend themselves to anyone writing for one'self and why not in conjunction with a class or profession? DennisOl: Hear, hear, Vance! NergizK: What I like about it is that you have a real audience. Some time ago, I created a Newsletter for my students (print) just to give them an audience. Now, there are blogs. VanceS: they are in spirit constructivist SeanEM: Well, i'm interested in blogging VanceS: exactly, Negiz, well put DennisOl: And they also have a global audience. NergizK: Hi Sean DennisOl: Great for intercultural collaboration. DennisOl: Great, Sean! VanceS: and they are searchable through tags SeanEM: yeah SeanEM 0 DennisOl: Definitely, Vance! VanceS: where are you hailing from today Sean? NergizK: Exactly, Dennis. This is especially interesting for students in monolingual classes SeanEM: New York City SeanEM: I'm a psychologist in training now SeanEM: but also thinking about becomin ga high school teacher VanceS: some of us will be coming there next month SeanEM: i intern in a college counseling center SeanEM: this and last year SeanEM: oh nice SeanEM: and next year too DennisOl: I completely agree, Nergiz. I had a great experience for nearly two years with Carla Arena and her and my students in Brazil and in Phoenix. DennisOl: Fascinating, Sean. SeanEM: heh SeanEM: thank you NergizK: I hope to be able to do something like that too, Dennis. NergizK: My problem was with one-to-one students. They had only me as an audience. DennisOl: There's no reason why you can't, Nergiz. NergizK: But most collaboratons are with classes on the Internet DennisOl: Well, by using blogs, Nergiz, their audience can expand as much as you want. NergizK is in the kitchen cooking lunch and chatting ... DennisOl: Collaborations don't have to be with entire classes. Even when classes are involved, the interactions are largely individual, anyway. DennisOl: What are you cooking, Nergiz? NergizK: Just pasta, Dennis. I love pasta, it's simple and good. DennisOl: Yum, yum! DennisOl: I like pasta, too. NergizK: And lends itself to chatting at the same time SeanEM: Do you know if there are groups DennisOl: Definitely! SeanEM: for univeristy faculty SeanEM: on Tapped In NergizK: That's one of the things we cannot share online EBobB joined the room. EBobB: What a group!! VanceS: hey eBob EBobB: Back among the live and living. EBobB: Where is everyone. EBobB: Hi all. NergizK: Hi EBob DennisOl: Sean: Go back to the entry page for Tapped In and do a search for university. DennisOl: Oops. Wrong. Pull down the menu for Groups and THEN do a search for university. I found 12 groups with a university orientation. EBobB: Hello Nergiz DennisOl: Hey, EB! EBobB: Hi Dennis. VanceS: what are you up to these days eBob EBobB: Ive been out for a while. EBobB: My website is still down, and my Mom has been ill. DennisOl: Sorry to hear about your mom, EB. EBobB: In fact, I was pretty much away from computing all of last week....and only marginally for the last several weeks. DennisOl: Sorry to hear about your website, too. Server problems? EBobB: My Mom is much better. EBobB: No, I got hacked. DennisOl: That's terrific news! DennisOl: Oy! SeanEM left the room (signed off). EBobB: no ,my Website got hacked. SeanEM joined the room. EBobB: So it is offline for now. DennisOl: WB, Sean. EBobB: It was sending out a phishing scam for an Italian bank. NergizK: From your website? JeffC joined the room. DennisOl: There's a well-known ESL/EFL publication that's been hacked repeatedly over the past six months or so. JeffC: really? EBobB: I guess, I am going to have to deconstruct the entire site and load it back up, one piece at a time. VanceS: arghhh JeffC: you've been hacked too ebob? NergizK: Sorry to hear that. So much work EBobB: I did not get much help from my Web provider in restoring my original site or in locating the trojan that was the hacker. EBobB: I am afraid so Jeff, you too? DennisOl: Jeff: Yes. ESL Magazine: DennisOl: http://www.eslmag.com/ EBobB: What did you guys do to get back online. JeffC: bob... do this... join JeffC: http://groups.google.com/group/stopbadware?hl=en DennisOl: But ESL Mag has been stable for the past month or so, so I guess they have the right kind of protection in place now. NinaTL joined the room. DennisOl: Nina! Hugs! JeffC: it's a google group that deals with malware attacks. NinaTL hugs Dennis NinaTL: Hi everyone! JeffC: plus... hold on... there's also a security forum (the link's on my other computer). DennisOl hugs Nina back. NergizK: Hi Nina EBobB: Well, they think mine got embedded in some module I put on my site. NinaTL: Hi, Nergiz EBobB: but they would not help me find it, so I am slowly wading through everythings. JeffC: my kids actually downloaded a trojan yesterday from... get this... disney. EBobB: I think , I am just going to clear the slate and start from scratch. DennisOl: From Disney? Oy! Who would ever have expected THAT??? NinaTL: Just a warning, I am popping in for about 5 minutes DennisOl: I think that's a good idea, EB. VanceS: Hi Nina NergizK: I've never had problems with viruses NinaTL: I have a houseguest (my friend Nedret, visiting from Ankara), and I have an online tutoring session coming up JeffC: well... it's possible their "pirates of the caribbean" site has been hacked. EBobB: If I do , I am planning to change services for one with better security and more streaming. NergizK: Nina, I was born in Ankara DennisOl: Nina: Nergiz is in Turkey! EBobB: It really sucks. DennisOl: I bet, EB. JeffC: you don't have your site backed up on your computer i take it. NinaTL: If you are talking about viruses etc why should Disney be immune? EBobB: I have a back up.... EBobB: but cant tell when the trojan was planted. NinaTL: Really, nergiz!? I thought you were born in germany of Turkish parents DennisOl: No reason at all, Nina. NinaTL: Yes, I know she is in Turkey now NergizK: No, born in Turkey but lived in Germany most of life NergizK: Just moved back to Turkeye NinaTL: Nedret and I played a trick on Beyza this week NergizK . o O ( she had a complicated life ) NinaTL: We were in my office at the U of MD and Beyza im'ed me NergizK: How? NinaTL: so I had Nedret respond in Turkish, pretending to be me NinaTL: We had a good laugh! DennisOl: Funny, Nina! EBobB: Anyway,, thankfully, much of what I have done in the last couple of years was stored on Google servers so i didnt shut down compltetely. NergizK: Which university? NinaTL: Of course it wasn't perfect Turkish because my computer isn't set up to do i's without dots, etc NinaTL: U of Maryland NinaTL: EBob, were you hacked? EBobB: I still lhave that stuff, I have my Ning, and I have some various things that resided somewhehre else on line. EBobB: Yes, Nina. NinaTL: How awful, I'm sorry DennisOl: Well, it's not as if you have to start over from scratch, then, EB. NergizK: On a Mac you can quickly change to different languages, even within a sentence EBobB: The Ning is clean, the Google stuf is clean. EBobB: etc. JeffC: go here bob... register... follow the instructions and you'll get help: http://forums.techguy.org/54-security/ NinaTL: I have a PC EBobB: but I had to take down my Moodle. DennisOl: That's a big advantage on a Mac, isn't it, nergiz? EBobB: Thansk Jeff. NergizK: مرحب NergizK: I love it VanceS: marhabatayn ya Nergiz DennisOl: But some things don't show up on some browsers. (Or maybe I just don't know how to do them.) NinaTL: I know Macs are wonderful but insofar as webhead things are concerned there are many things they can't do NinaTL: so if I can have only 1 computer I prefer to have the more versatile one NinaTL: by versatile I mean the one which more platforms and applications work with VanceS: why not a dual boot one? NergizK: That's true Nina, but it's getting better. NinaTL: What's that? Do they exist? DennisOl: That's what I want, Vance—an Intel Mac. NinaTL: And macs are still more expensive I think, right? DennisOl: Yes, they definitely exist, Nina. NergizK: Vance, I'm a beginner in Arabic. NergizK: Dual boot is good. But then you have the virus problem again, which you don't have on a Mac NergizK: On the new Macs you have that optioin Nina EBobB: I have a dual boot system (not computer)) with Ubuntu and Windows. EBobB: But it means, Ihave to exit one, to get to the other. NergizK: Expensive, not really any more DennisOl: Yes, the virus problem is a definite consideration, Nergiz. EBobB: I like the UBuntu, but it really slows you down to have to put programs into two places. EBobB: Its almost like two different machines. NergizK: I think the best thing is to have two computers like Dennis DennisOl: Yes, that works for me, but right now, my PC is located in an inconvenient place, so it's not easy to work with both at the same time. EBobB: I think the b est thing would b e for companies to be cross platform or open sources, but that aint going to happen. DennisOl: I agree, EB . . . sadly. EBobB: Proprietary makes mondey. EBobB: and money makes the world go round. DennisOl: EB: As one of my students once said, "Fasho, fasho." JeffC heads back to bed.. keep me posted ebob... jbcoops@gmail.com NinaTL: Nergiz, when did you move back to Turkey and why did you decide to move back? EBobB: Sometimes we forget the net was not made for education only. DennisOl: Does anyone understand "Fasho, fasho"? EBobB: Thanks Jeff, I will. NinaTL: nope NergizK: Just recently, Nina. Last summer, Imoved back bu then went to the UK for my DELTA course and came back to Turkey in December. NinaTL: Where in Turkey are you? NergizK: By Jeff DennisOl: "Fasho, fasho" = Fo' sho', Fo' sho' (For sure, For sure). NinaTL: rotfl NergizK: rotfl? DennisOl: I'd never seen it written as "Fasho, fasho"—or any other way, as a matter of fact, but I've heard it spoken all my life! NinaTL: rolling on the floor laughing NergizK is laughing NinaTL: Why did you decide to return, Nergiz? DennisOl laughs along with Nina and Nergiz NergizK: Only because all my family is her, Nina. I've quit my job and moved. Let's see. NinaTL: and has been a difficult adjustment for you? EBobB: Well, it is turning spring here, and I need to get outside and work today. NinaTL: So your parents came back with you EBobB: So I need to sign off. NinaTL: Well, EBob, good luck with everything DennisOl: I wish you were here in Phoenix to do some work for me, EB! DennisOl: Take good care, hear? NergizK: Bye EBob. Enjoy it EBobB: Ill be in touch via the yahoo groupsl NinaTL: Here it's still winter, but my daffodils are up about 5-6 inches already--spring is definitely coming EBobB: Ah, Dennis, I didnt know you had to do anything to yards in Phoenix. NergizK: No, Nina, i was alone in Germany. My family has been in Turkey. EBobB: I just thought you put in the gravel and left it alone. NinaTL: I see DennisOl: My back yard looks like a jungle now, EB. NinaTL: I thought you had grown up there DennisOl: My front yard is gravel, but the back one isn't. EBobB: Thats exactly the look I am going for, Dennis. NergizK: I left Turkey when I was five NinaTL: not by yourself! EBobB: In fact, I am about to put out some new Bannana trees around the hot tub. NergizK: No, then with my mom. But they returned many years ago. NergizK: I know, sounds complicated NinaTL: One of my neighbors has a banana tree, believe it or not DennisOl: Even gravel yards take some care, though—keeping the gravel raked and taking care of any grass that manages to grow through it. NinaTL: They take it in every winter and bring it out every May EBobB: and install a new walkway so my grandkid can ride his bike in cirlcles. DennisOl: Sounds like you're quite a handyman, EB. NergizK: People have Palm trees in Germany NinaTL: One year it actually had a bunch of bananas, but they did not have time to ripen before the cold set in NinaTL: How does it feel to be home again? EBobB: I have a great Palm tree here. EBobB: I planted it when it was but 12 inches tall, and now it is nearly 20 NinaTL: !!! DennisOl: I have a palm in front of the house and would like to have some palmetto in the back. EBobB: It has not frozen back yet... NinaTL: no palms here! EBobB: and with luck will last a longn time. NergizK: I'm not sure I'm at home Nina. What#s home? DennisOl: Wow! That's amazing, EB! NergizK: EBob where are you? NinaTL: I have an "itia", a Greek willow EBobB: Its more of a Texas native...so it can take light freezes. NinaTL: Good question, Nergiz! I think home is probably where your family is EBobB: Its a windmill palm NinaTL: Robert Frost said, "Home is where when you have to go there they have to take you in" DennisOl: I'd really like to have a chilopsis—a "desert willow." (Actually not a willow at all, but that's what people call it.) EBobB: and Banana trees usually come back year after year, but one year something got in my soil and ate at the roots. NinaTL: picture, Dennis? NergizK: ha ha , I like that one, Nina DennisOl: Hold on, Nina. NinaTL: me too! EBobB: I also have a nice dessert willow, but it is more a show tree than anything else. EBobB: Its fairly small, but blooms a lot. EBobB: Ill have to do a gardening weekend at Knowplace, again some day. NergizK: Nina, you can have alook at my brand new first blog where I talk a bit about that (my Baw08 experimen): http://rediscovering-bursa.blogspot.com/ EBobB: I did one once and it was a pretty good success. DennisOl: Chilopsis: DennisOl: http://images.google.com/images?q=chilopsis&sourceid=mozilla2&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi NinaTL: Wow, Nergiz, thank you very much! DennisOl: Oops! I thought I had a Tiny URL. NergizK: You're welcome. EBobB: Its okk Dennis, I caught it anyway. DennisOl: http://tinyurl.com/yuhuru NergizK: I clicked on it but nothing happens.. NinaTL: Is that a tree? EBobB: I have to go read my emails to catch up, and then get outside. NinaTL: looks like a flower EBobB: See you all online. DennisOl: Try the shorter one, Nergiz. NinaTL: There's something you may have to change in your settings DennisOl: Yes, "Desert Willos" have beautiful flowers. EBobB: Im doing a Wiki weekend at Knowplace next weekend, so join me. NergizK: Nope, Dennis. And I cannt copy it either NinaTL: Tata, EBob DennisOl: "Willows" EBobB: Bye all. SeanEM: im gonna be away a lil while NergizK: Bye EBob SeanEM: BBL SeanEM left the room (signed off). EBobB left the room (signed off). NinaTL: Jeff showed me how to do it once but I can't remember what I did DennisOl: This works for me: NinaTL: something about enabling popups in new windows I think DennisOl: http://tinyurl.com/yuhuru NergizK: Hm NergizK: I just typed it in to a new window - good to have tinyurl DennisOl: Try holding down the Apple key and then clicking on the tinyurl above, Nergiz. NinaTL: You can also "send to pasteboard" the chat and copy the url from there DennisOl: Yes, that's a good idea, Nina. NergizK: Hey, great! That worked. I've learned so much today. Thank you all NinaTL: If the url is long that works better DennisOl: Rica ederim! NinaTL: I wonder where my student is! NergizK: I mean Send to Paste... worked NergizK: Your student? NinaTL: I was supposed to meet a student I am tutoring online at 8:45 NinaTL: It is now after 9 BeyzaY joined the room. NinaTL: Hi, Beyza! DennisOl: Beyza! NinaTL: Everybody ate a lot and it was fun BeyzaY: greeat Delin and u? NergizK: Hi Delin DelinC: Hi. It's grat fun for the meal! NergizK: On Presentataions... NergizK: Teachers who want to use a simple presentation format to communicate to students, parents or other teachers can use presentations in Google Docs. You can create a presentation collaboratively and even co-present it online with live chat, for example with a sister classroom teacher. Students can easily of create group presentations and access them anywhere. BeyzaY: cool NergizK: Regadring documents, you can chat in real time but I guess not with voice: Edit and present with others in real time. Multiple people can view and make changes at the same time. There's an on-screen chat window for spreadsheets, and document revisions show you exactly who changed what, and when. Viewing a presentation together is a breeze, as anyone joined in a presentation can automatically follow along with the presenter. NergizK: Here is the link: http://www.google.com/google-d-s/tour2.html NergizK: I'll try it out soon NinaTL: YM works fine VanceS: you can create ppt presentations in Google docs as well NinaTL: We both hopen the document and edit it while discussing the changes on YM NinaTL: open NergizK: Nina, there I have the "Mac problem" again - No voice chat in YM at the moment. I use Skype NergizK: Have you done that, Vance? NinaTL: Skype would work equally well NinaTL: I do a fair amount of turoing and it's usually for writing, so this is a good option for me NergizK: I just want to avoid that my students have to sign up for too many tools, want to keep it simple NinaTL: I live 25 miles from the university so students don't like to travel to my home for tutoring NergizK: Nina, are these students that you tutor off-campus? NinaTL: and I have no time to tutor during the week NergizK: Ah, that answers my question NinaTL: They are usually students who contact the institute looking for a tutor VanceS: I have used Google Docs presentation software but prefer working in PPT and uploading to slideshare.net BeyzaY: google docs will definitely useful in writing right NinaTL: They are often students BeyzaY: slideshare is great NergizK: What's the advantage, Vance? NergizK: Is that also synchronous? NinaTL: I see my student is online now so I think I will be leaving you pretty soon BeyzaY: np Nina NinaTL: It was nice to have time to chat today NinaTL: Nergiz, I am going to read your blog with great interest! BeyzaY: I wish I had come a little earlier NergizK: Ok, Nina. Was nice chatting with you BeyzaY: what's the url nergiz? NinaTL: We'll see each other online NergizK: It was longer than five minutes :-) VanceS: advantage to me is being able to work offline NergizK: OK, thanks, you can leave a comment VanceS: if collaborating though advantage would be with Google docs NinaTL: I will! :-) BeyzaY: btw I ve also updated minea bout voicethread BeyzaY: I strongly advise u to check it as well NergizK: I see, Vance. So there is a place for all tools. NinaTL: Bye all JudithSW joined the room. NinaTL hugs everyone goodbye JudithSW left the room. NinaTL left the room (signed off). BeyzaY: bye Nina NergizK: Beyza, the Url is http://rediscovering-bursa.blogspot.com/ BeyzaY: ohh is it about Bursa? NergizK: It will take me the rest of the year to check out all those tools NergizK: Yes, Beyza NergizK: My first blog BeyzaY: it takes time to process all this info NergizK: I want my students to do something similar, so I started this. NergizK: Beyza, have you seen my first wiki? That one is for teachers BeyzaY: the one about Delta? NergizK: I just need to re-record the voice message, had technical problems. NergizK: Yes BeyzaY: the bolg is really good it's really nice to read about a different topic BeyzaY: some of my colleagues are doing delta BeyzaY: so I've also sent them the link to your wikþ NergizK: Really? Send them to my wiki, please! NergizK: Ah, good :-) NergizK: There isn't much content yet but I imagine if they left some questions somebody might reply JBM joined the room. BeyzaY: yes some of them extended it because we teach a lot BeyzaY: I also intend to have a DELTA NergizK: I'm still waiting for the results .... it's taking so long VanceS: I'm going to leave folks BeyzaY: but I feel overwhelmed when I see them NergizK: OK Vance. Thanks VanceS: nice to see everyone BeyzaY: have a great day VANCE NergizK: Nice to see you too, Vance VanceS: you too beyza BeyzaY: have u seen my blog Nergiz? NergizK: Beyza, we were seven in the group and two gave up before the end BeyzaY: omg I feel more overwhelemed now NergizK: I think yes, but you can give me the url BeyzaY: http://beyzasfirsblog.blogspot.com NergizK: No, need to. You just have to be well-prepared BeyzaY: it s my first blog BeyzaY: well it's really hard to do that in my teaching context NergizK: That's why I started the wiki. Many candidates don't know what it really is about NergizK: That's why I did it full-time NergizK: Thanks for the link. VanceS waves VanceS left the room (signed off). 2008.03.02 06:26:37 Signoff |
